Refugia M. SanchezOur beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt passed away peacefully in her home.Refugia “Cookie” Sanchez was born June 19, 1932 in Gallup, New Mexico to Refugio and Soledad Sanchez. She was born the first of five children; Refugia, Vicki, Lawrence, Raymond and Juanita.Her family moved from Gallup, New Mexico to East Carbon following the mining boom. There she attended East Carbon High where she made many lifelong friends.Cookie married her first husband Gilbert J. Hunt September 25th, 1949. They had three boys, Gilbert J. Hunt, David Hunt and Richard Hunt. They later divorced but stayed friends over the years.She married Huey C. Alderin and added her last son Anthony Alderin. They later divorced.Cookie married Carl Searle, they did not have any children together, but she gained three bonus children, Rhea, Gilbert and Carlene. They also divorced.R. Gilbert Gonzalez walked into Cookie’s life and swept her off her feet. They met while working for Hill Air Force Base where Cookie later retired after 25 years of service. Gil was the love of her life, they were together for 25 years before deciding to marry on December 12, 2007. Cookie and Gil shared a beautiful life of making memories, traveling, dancing, dinner dates and so much more. She was truly happy and missed Gilbert every day after his passing in November of 2011.She loved cooking for everyone who came over, you never left her house hungry. She was very particular about her lawn and enjoyed working in the yard. Cookie was always on the go and stayed busy from day to day, whether it was shopping, visiting the cemetery, dinner at the club with good friends or painting her nails she always occupied her time. She truly enjoyed the company of her pets and loved them very much. Her fiery sass has been a known trait her whole life and she wouldn’t have been her without it.Above all Cookie loved her boys with everything she had, she lived for them. She carried that love to her grandkids whom she cared for very much. She will be greatly missed.Cookie is survived by her sons; Gilbert J. Hunt (Sandra) and Tony Alderin. Her grandchildren; Kaylene Hunt, Dustin (Trista) Hunt, Sabrina (Kenny) Hefflefinger, Monica Hunt, Jaylin Spiva, Kevin (Mika) Quinn, and Jason Quinn. Great grandchildren; Rikki Louna Hunt, Olivia Clare Hunt, Colin Quinn and Scarlett Quinn. She’s also survived by her loving nieces and nephews.Grandma gained an amazing bunch of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren when she met and later married Gilbert, they loved her like their own and they never hesitated to help. She loved and cared for them very much.Richard & Kimberly Gonzales, Maria Gonzalez, Yolanda & David Vasquez, Felix & Rachel Gonzales, Maxine Arellano and many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.Cookie is proceeded in death by her loving husband R. Gilbert Gonzales. Her parents; Refugio and Soledad Sanchez, two sons; David Hunt and Richard Hunt. Siblings; Vicki, Lawrence, Raymond and Juanita.A promise never broken, like clockwork her phone rang every night. Yolanda promised Cookie she’d call to check on her after Gilbert passed away in 2011. She looked forward to those calls every night, they meant the world to her.A special thanks to her Hospice Nurse Brandy and the Hospice team at Signature Home Health and Hospice.Mass will be held Friday, August 9th at 1:30 pm. Friends and family may join for Mass at St Rose of Lima.Light lunch will be held afterwards across the street at Chapel Park.
