Jim was born in Celina Tennessee, on January 30, 1943. His family moved to Utah from Tennessee in 1945. He went to Hopkins Elementary in west Ogden, and Wilson Lane Elementary on Wilson Lane. He also attended Wahlquist Junior High and graduated from Weber High School in 1961. He spent two years at Weber State College before being drafted into the Army in 1964. After training in Fort Polk, Louisiana, he was sent to South Korea in the 3rd. Battalion 32nd infantry then to Okinawa. He spent two years in the Army and was released in February 1966. Jim worked at Sperry Rand for six years, in Salt Lake City, as a machinist. Jim was then hired into the machine shop, building 507 at HAFB. He worked as a machinist for 7 years and he was picked as a Quality Assurance Specialist for the rest of his time at HAFB. He retired in January 2002. He spent a lot of time at Henry Lake in Idaho and in Strawberry, fly fishing. He also spent a lot of time at Red Butte Gardens, listening to concerts. His father James was nick named Sully and the name followed onto Jim as well. James Sr. passed away in 1985, his mother, Pettious, passed away in 2009, his brother Richard passed in June of 2016. His brothers, Robert and Mike live in the Ogden area. His sister Sandra lives in Missouri. Jim's remaining family live in the Nashville, Tennessee area. Jim did not want any funeral services, only to be cremated and his ashes scattered in a river.
