I thought about going outside without a coat, even on this day that’s soon to reach 75 degrees and I remember that my mom was always hounding us about one thing or another. “You can’t go outside without a coat” “Are you sure you aren’t hungry” Uggghhh, the collective sighs of everyone who knew our mother.Cheri Schmid Dittrich born on July 9, 1948 to Gail Richardson Marshall originally of Roosevelt and Donald Schmid originally of Minneapolis, was an independent, strong woman who went through life with many hardships and still had a calm patient nature most of the time. She married Jay W. Palmer and to this union she was blessed with her 5 children. They later divorced. She married Jack Gailey and he preceded her in death. She married Mike Dittrich and he preceded her in death. Those who knew her knew not to argue with her though, she’d come back with a spirit that one assumes comes from the fiery red head that was her mother and the tall strong German that was her father. Our mom was a very private person to the extreme. It was funny because she was so private that when she spoke on the phone, she assumed other people would hear so she would refer to my brothers as “what’s his name” and “you know who” which became an inside joke for some of us.Our mother loved the outdoors, she loved fishing and viewing the scenery. She would always say, look how beautiful that is whenever we drove past mountains or sunsets or pine trees. Our mother passed suddenly on May 4, 2016 after a short illness. She didn’t like going to the doctor and didn’t believe in taking pills for any reason. We are thankful that she didn’t have to spend time in care facilities and that she didn’t have to suffer or have her independence taken from her.Our mother was a member of AA and sober for over 30 years. She loved attending meetings and going to the Alano club in Ogden to spend time with her friends there. She will be greatly missed by all of her friends and family. She is survived by her five children: Kirk Palmer, Jay Palmer (Randi), Steven Palmer, Sean Palmer and Heather Palmer Strickland all of the Wasatch Front. Her grandchildren: Vanessa Mattson, Steven Palmer, Jake Palmer, Ashley Palmer, Jace Strickland, Haylie Strickland, Samantha Wingfield and Gage Wingfield. Her Brothers and sister: Mike Marshall (Terre), Bob Marshall (Bonnie) and Lynn Bergen (Larry) and a host of nephews, nieces and friends that loved her. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband Jack Gailey, husband Mike Dittrich and Grandchildren Amanda Mattson and Nichole Palmer.A viewing will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2016 from 6-8p.m. at Provident Funeral Home 3800 South Washington Blvd., Ogden, UT.
